Other people do NOT make us feel good or bad; it is our reaction to them. It is our choice as to how we respond. It is our choice of how we feel and think in response to what other people do. Do this exercise for 5 to 10 minutes three times a day for 10 days. Write down how you felt before the first exercise; write how you feel at the end of 10 days.

After you have practiced Exercise One for a few days, begin to ask yourself how you are feeling and thinking? How do these thoughts and feelings serve you; do they help or hinder your well being?
So how do we change our thinking and feeling to a better condition?
Think of how you want to feel and think, how about “happy” and “relaxed”? As simple as this exercise sounds, it works; try it. Begin to think happy and relaxed thoughts.
If we win a new car and react with happiness, the new car is NOT making us happy. Our decision to be happy in response to winning a car is what creates the happiness.
Of course, a life threatening event will get a strong response from any human. But most of every day is NOT a life threatening event. In the modern world, even if there is a life threatening event, the situation is usually best solved in a civil and balanced way without “emergency” emotions.
Sounds easy doesn’t it? It is easy, but getting yourself to actually do it and practice day after day it is NOT easy. Most of us need and help and reminders… such as reading an article like this.
1. Look at your feet, imagine that they feel happy and relaxed.
2. Think of your arms, from shoulder to elbow, as being happy and relaxed.
3. Imagine your hands full of pleasure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your knees being happy, your legs and thighs and your head at peace and happy too.
4. Go through every inch of your body imagining it happy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], relaxed and pleasurable.

We control our feelings and thoughts. No one else puts them there but ourselves. We can change our feelings and thoughts any time we want.
Our thoughts and feelings are a reaction to life events. This reaction is OUR reaction and no other person's; we are responsible for our reactions, thoughts and feelings.
We often get stuck in habitual reactions: when something happens, we react a certain way again and again. When we fail to achieve or acquire something we want, we may get upset and worried. This seems natural and normal. But the failure or missed expectation does not create our bad feelings and uncomfortable thoughts, WE DO!
Circumstances do not matter: Good situations come and go. Bad situations are the same; they rarely last forever. The question is: How are you reacting? How do you feel and think? Would you change it if you could? You can change right now in this exercise.
We are all able to control our happiness regardless of life events, regardless of what is happening around us. We are intended and neurologically designed to control our feelings and thoughts and create a world we like. My aim was to stay in the background, out of the way, and out of shouting range when one of their antics pushed him to his limits. He was a forgiving father though, so it wasn't long before we were all laughing and singing together once more. Those years seemed to be for singing operettas, mostly Rodgers and Hammerstein, since they were the favorites of the time. Our exposure to music was not limited to any one period or classification though. On the Victrola, dad would play Nelson Eddie and Rise Stevens' rendition of "The Chocolate Soldier." Then there was Beatrice Kay, with her throaty, dance-hall voice,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Kay Kaiser, as well; who made wacky sound effects accompanied by music -- a man well before his time, for entertainment. The combination of Carole and Martha both being teens was more than enough to keep a father busy without any added help from a third little woman.

Oh yes, dad carried a harmonica around in his pocket, just in case, and pulled it out on several occasions when we were traveling or visiting others where no instruments were present. And after my third teacher's departure, dad decided that it was just going to be me and my piano from there on. I liked that thought. Without daily structured lessons, I could do whatever I wanted -- great. I taught myself -- now don't get the wrong idea -- I'm not a great pianist. Those structured lessons might have helped.
Most often, living with dad was like living with a mentor. He wasn't just our father -- he was also our friend, our fishing buddy, our art teacher, our clown, and most of all a great Italian tenor. He sang like Enrico Caruso as well as anyone, including Mario Lanza. Pagliacci was his favorite, or at least the one I remember the most. We didn't have air conditioning back then, and with windows wide open, the neighborhood was his audience. No complaints though, only smiles on faces as they listened to the music that filled the air. Just follow the only male voice in our home to wherever it led you, and there was our dad smiling. Our lessons of music seemed to have no limitations. Papa took us to free summer concerts in the parks and in later years, to the Muni. My first experience with classical music was when he once escorted us to a young people’s concert at the old Kiel Auditorium. That experience has stayed long and lovingly, lingering in my memories. It was the day I found my soul and began to recognize the passion that stirs within me from listening to music of all sorts echoing through the air. My grandma Adele, played the piano well, and with her large family of thirteen, they had their own family orchestra going. Those who couldn't play; sang -- no one was left out and no one was unimportant. Each ones contribution made the family an undivided community from which nourishing moments produced growth and sharing.
But I do love playing and tinkering at the keys. It has become an extension of myself and allows me to express what words cannot. Many a time, when no one's around, of course, I cozy up to the piano and let my fingers tell the keys what I'm feeling. It's a very private thing shared only with myself and Source; a very private moment. It's not my music that makes it grand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the sharing it with Source.
